what i've sewn lately(ish)

I made this dress in october and I'm just getting around to posting pictures now... I really like the red of the dress and normally wear it without a shirt underneath, but in the spirit of being a good loli i posted pictures of it with a shirt under it also. It has a bib thats detachable and a bow at the back that ties from the sides. I do kind-of prefer it without the bib though.

The inside is completely surged and finished however its not lined (mostly because im lazy). Also while making this dress I learnt why not to let your boyfriend help you sew... The bow that ties from the side was added later, after he cut a hole in the side of the bodice with the surger. >.<>

Sew diffrerent!

Remember the button? that cute little round thing with the holes? i know you see a lot of zippers around these days, especially on punk clothing but buttons can be cool too! But Sometimes just sewing them on the normal way is boring, so heres an idea to spice up sewing and add some detail and personalization to whatever your making! I've even seen buttons shaped like cupcakes! and they don't have to be expensive either, you can buy a bag of assorted buttons for somewhere between 1-5 dollars and you get like 100 buttons of all sorts of shapes and sizes.

making shapes like this only really works with buttons that have 4 holes though, but as you can see you can make shapes while still sewing through all 4 holes of the button! and you can make different shapes if you turn the button, like and X becomes a +, You can even do arrows and the letter Z.

I think this would be an adorable way to spice up a bag or a t-shirt and even cover small holes along a seam line or in a corner or just sew on like a normal button. its up to you to decide!

Recommended Reading

I bought this book a while ago actually and only thought to talk about it now, Its a really good reference book for sewing and theres a couple projects like the apron that would be really neat to try. Its a bit pricy running at about 45$ but if you want to start or improve your sewing this book is great! It really does show everything from how to thread a needle to how to do reverse appliques.

I sew a fair amount and i find it useful for ideas and if i forget how to do something, it also has techniques that you might not have heard of before such as hemming techniques that look invisible and herringbone seams (i had no idea they existed) that look really cool. Give the book a look over and see what you think!

petticoats!

So far today was a very productive day, i made a petticoat for myself witch was quite interesting and i would suggest if you don't need to make one yourself- don't! theres so much fabric to look after and gather and the tulle itself seems to disappear if you put it on the floor!

i started to cut the fabric before i realized what i was getting myself into and Oh My! i was swimming in fabric before i knew it. though in the end it turned out pretty good and it does the job alright i was hoping it would have a little more poof. Oh well.
