a tea party for beginners.

My weekend was fun! my friends loved the bears i made! yay~ but after all the tea drinking at the party i feel inspired to do a post on a proper tea party! this is mostly a reference for the host of the tea party having it in their own home/yard though ^^.

The Tea Basics: Know your tea, theres many different styles but the main 4 are black, green, white and herbal. For a tea party you want to choose a tea that suits the party and is probably on the fancy side, aka a loose leaf tea. you can get nice tea from specialty stores that specialize in coffee or tea theres bound to be one in your town somewhere.

Black tea is best for a tea party because you can add milk and sugar to it and it is the most common of the teas. But there are still different blends of black tea, some more fruity, some more bitter, try to pick one that you think your guests would like. the 3 normal black teas are Orange pekoe, earl grey and english breakfast.

Set Up: the set up depends on your location, is it indoor or outdoor? what season is it? but you always want a nice table and a table cloth that reflects the season and the colours of the room or garden. I would also recommend a plastic tablecloth liner to go under the table cloth and protect the table just in case.

you will want a centrepiece for the table, like candles or a flower vase and to have a nice napkin holder and nice napkins, fabric or paper whichever you prefer. you will also want comfy chairs.

Tableware: Theres 2 ways to go about tableware for a tea party, you can have everything match or you can have a bunch of different styles that don't really match.

Either way you will want everyone to have: a teacup, a saucer, and a teaspoon.

you will also need: a sugar spoon, a sugar container, a creamer, a teapot and if you are serving food a plate/platter for that.

*note: the guests dont use their tea spoon to add sugar to their cups, that is what the sugar spoon is for. teaspoons are for stirring tea.

Etiquette and such:

-you should add all the tea and sugar BEFORE pouring the tea in the cup. if you do it in the reverse order it will have a different flavour.

-you should pour out the guests old or cold tea before pouring them a new cup.

-the host should at least pour everyones first cup of tea.

-unless your eating lots of food you can avoid extra plates and have them put their cookies and other bite sized treats on their saucer.

-ladies are always allowed to keep their hats on at the table because it is considered a part of their outfit. just like you wouldn't take bracelets off to eat because they are part of your outfit.

-always try to be in host mode unless something big happens, don't just let your guests fend for themselves.

Sew diffrerent!

Remember the button? that cute little round thing with the holes? i know you see a lot of zippers around these days, especially on punk clothing but buttons can be cool too! But Sometimes just sewing them on the normal way is boring, so heres an idea to spice up sewing and add some detail and personalization to whatever your making! I've even seen buttons shaped like cupcakes! and they don't have to be expensive either, you can buy a bag of assorted buttons for somewhere between 1-5 dollars and you get like 100 buttons of all sorts of shapes and sizes.

making shapes like this only really works with buttons that have 4 holes though, but as you can see you can make shapes while still sewing through all 4 holes of the button! and you can make different shapes if you turn the button, like and X becomes a +, You can even do arrows and the letter Z.

I think this would be an adorable way to spice up a bag or a t-shirt and even cover small holes along a seam line or in a corner or just sew on like a normal button. its up to you to decide!

Friendship brear gift idea!

So two of my friends are having a conjoined late (almost early, their birthday is in november) birthday party. Its so late that i don't know if other people are bringing presents but i would feel rude not bringing one, so i thought i would go the cute, sentimental road!

Im making matching teddybears from purple and yellow fabric with little button eyes. the fronts and ears are different colours but the back is all the same colour, one purple and one yellow. that way they mach and they both have something i made just for them! I hope they like the present!

In the picture one is finished but the other one is still a work in progress! im sewing its eyes on now.

I think these are the coolest flowers i've ever seen! they bloom upside down and look kind-of like an octopus! i just had to toss the picture in, i felt like such a stalker taking a picture of flowers in someone else's front lawn.

And on a side note, the giveaway i mentioned a while ago should be ready this weekend! look forward to it!

book review: Boneshaker

I stumbled upon this book while walking by the local independent bookstore and noticing the awesome looking poster in the window but I honestly enjoyed this book! it was very well written with a wonderful plot and everyones favourite, character development! the book takes place in a sort of alternate reality 1880's Seattle, full of zombies and poisonous gas. Focusing on a mother and son who go on a grand adventure through the zombie infested streets of the city.

I wasn't expecting it to be so mother-and-son-ly but it was a nice break from shojo manga and romancy books. Theres not really anything lolita about the book, but it does qualify as steampunk, and isn't steampunk the cousin of lolita?

the book is a bit over 400 pages long and makes a great summer read for anyone who likes steampunk or zombies!

sewing loli on a budget

To start off, i sew a lot. I'm also thinking of opening an etsy shop but not quite yet. I also don't have a lot of money to do stuff with so finding things for cheap is good ^^. so here are some tips to sewing loli clothes on a budget.

-Just because your dress has a lot of ruffles doesn't mean that you need a ton of fabric. 3-4 meters is normally enough and you tend to have extra.

-if you plan on buying a lot of fabric from the same store, and if they offer it buy a membership.

-space out your pattern for maximum efficiency, so no large spaces between pieces or crazy stuff like that.

-shop in the bargain sections of the fabric store first! most stores have a wall at the back of discounted fabric thats either ugly, from last season or just wouldn't sell, these are normally SO much cheaper than anything else and sometimes you can find a great deal! i once bought 4 meters of perfectly good pink cotton twill for like 15$.

-Shop online, if you buy in bulk this can save you a lot of money, especially on things like lace.

-dont buy things you will never use! i know there are some cute buttons but you will never use them >.<

these are a few things i do to save money on fabric, just some general pointers really but good to keep in mind.

lolita and cosplay.

I had tons of fun at the local anime convention this year (though i do every year)! though i noticed some interesting things... There are no regular lolitas in my aeria but there are many who will cosplay it! why is lolita so tempting to cosplay? maybe because its cute or fancy but when you go into the venders room you see all these lolita-esque outfits being sold along with the regualr school girl/naruto/bleach cosplays!

bah! fashion being sold as cosplay! its kind of annoying but i suppose theres a market for it and i must say i to started off as a cosplay loli. everyones got to start somewhere right? if you start wearintg it as cosplay simply because you like wearing dresses and looking pretty then theres no reason to think of it as much different from a life style lolita, they just dont wear it any other time.

I have also heard that lolitas feel it wrong or improper to cosplay, this is not true! or at least this is my opinion. A hobby shouldent make you give up other hobbies because it doesnt mesh well, i do bolth and no ones yelled at me yet. though i have noticed that most lolitas dont cosplay if you like to theres nothing stopping you.

crafts

Ravelry, almost sounds like a place to party but is quite the opposite. I found this community while looking for things to knit one day while i was bored and i think its really cool! there are many free patterns for knitting and crochet and if you need help there are people to help.

when i first started crocheting and knitting i couldn't do anything that required a step by step pattern where you need "this many of this or that", because i always made a mistake somewhere that messed the whole thing up, or i had absolutely no idea what the pattern was talking about so this would be a huge help!

take a gander at it, there are many cute frilly patterns for the more experienced or simple ones for the beginner! i'm working on a cute scarf right now from this place ^^

Kendo!

A while ago i tuck up kendo just as a fun sport, iI'm not very good at it but its a great workout! The other reason i joined was to learn more about the history and traditions of japan. Japan has a rich history that goes back farther then anything in Canada really, and i really enjoy european and asian history where things go back centuries because of that depth and sense of time.

We as lolitas tend to know a lot about whats going on in japan fashion wise and trend wise but we often don't pay attention to things like politics or history because it doesn't really interest us.

But i figured if I'm going to spend so much time with Anime, manga and fashion from japan i should learn more then just the information given in those, considering that most stories will have changed the history for a better story and loli bloggers don't talk much about history or tradition because they themselves aren't interested. So kendo i figure is a good way to get aquainted with japanese history without pouring over books and the like.

just an idea really, maybe its only me interested in all this history stuff ^^

Rant about fashion

I've been looking at some "high class" runway fashion lately and the thought struck me, isn't fashion what you wear out day to day really? and what the majority of people wear? Its fashionable to wear headbands that look like bunny ears right now, you know because you see people wearing them, so where did this idea of fashion being abstract coming from? would anyone actually buy the dress above and wear it outside or to dinner? could you even sit down in it?

Honestly i believe the american fashion industry as well as some european one have lost touch with reality. The picture above is from a russian company and i may not know the fashion scene in russia at all but i don't think anyone is wearing anything like that. considering the costs to make high fashion dresses because if all the things done by hand you think they would make something people could actually wear.

I'm glad that high fashion like this isn't that popular though, i would never want to look like a gift wrap gone wrong or C3PO like most of the pictures i see, what audience are these clothes being sold to anyways other than maybe lady ga ga (she's amazing though). i suppose i'm just confused as to why people are designing clothes real people would and could never wear when the whole point of fashion is to wear what everyone else is or look good by your standards.

my away time

I've been away for a while and i thought i should explain the reason why, of coarse its dance related, there was a national exebition in our city preparing for the world gymnaesrada in 2011 in switzerland (link here). The canadian gymnaestrada was from thursday to saturday and was super tiring with the hours of practice before hand and whatnot and actually performing. there was also an article in the newspaper written about us! (here)

But, as you can see i have survived to blog again! and should mention what else i have been up to lately.

today i went and bought some lovely tea from Cornalia Bean called cornelia rose, they sell all sorts of tea and coffee stuff, i also got a travel tea mug that will be put to good use! it has a built in strainer for tea leaves and everything.

I've also been sewing cosplay for the upcoming anime convention, heres hoping that everything will be finished on time!
theres a giveaway at Milk Tea's blog! go check it out!

People watching

There has been a lot of talk lately about body image and the like so i though i would give my two cents. My BMI is always weird for me because it says I'm at risk for obesity sometimes and others it says I'm ideal, truth is i have a lot of muscle on me (witch ways more then fat) and that always messes me up. Your BMI is not something to live by its just a generalization of how you probably are.

In my personal experience the people most insecure about their weight are people who compare themselves to the wrong people. Models are not a good comparison because they are chosen because they are skinny and perfect looking and all that, how can you ever compare? Good people to compare yourself with are just random people at the beach or pool for example, you'll feel much better about your body image looking at real people.

Never look down at yourself literally, if you do you'll see a lot of things that aren't there just because of the angle, so always look at yourself in the mirror. another thing that will make you lose 5 pounds instantly is stand up straight and pull your abs in, and magic! you look thinner and have better posture!

so watch real people to get and idea about where you stand body wise and remember to stand up straight!

Manicure Tutorial

I found this tutorial on youtube on how to do an easy french manicure! i had never gotten one or done one till after watching this and i must say i think it turned out pretty good! the link is here! I would have posted a picture of my nails with this, but my nail polish is starting to come off so i didn't.

But i did also try doing pink instead of white at the tip and i really liked how it looked! next step after i master this: adding deco!

outfit shots

Its been raining a lot lately but i've managed to wear nice stuff on the nice days! I don't often wear lolita when it rains because i don't want to get what i'm wearing wet and i don't feel like putting thought into what i'm wearing if its going to get all gross and wet. Most of what i wear is more casual lolita that i make myself because at the moment i cant afford brand.

In this outfit i decided to wear my favourite skirt with a simple black blouse tucked in and tights, I'm also wearing my house slippers, they keep just my toes warm the way i like it. i wore black high heels when i went out.

This is another "on my way to dance" shot, again with the same skirt but a more casual look without a petticoat.

This day was really warm so i'm wearing shorts with a t-shirt, i absolutely love the design on the t-shirt, its an octopus! I'm also wearing a crocheted buret that you can just barely see in the picture. I normally don't wear shorts though because i have pasty white ghost legs.

I had this dress in my last outfit post but i was wearing it with tights to go to dance, heres what it looks like on me without, much better. Im wearing a cute black purse also, I really like it but it doesn't fit my wallet.

Thats about it for now! I have another post in the works that should be up tomorrow!

Luts

Following up on the dolls, I'm going to do a profile of another doll company called Luts, its mostly known for its boy dolls but they also sell many girl ones as well. I own a boy and a girl from this company and he's very nice, the bodies have good proportions, nice hands, lots of detail and to top it all off the company has good customer service. The only thing to be wary about is that they can take a while to ship because they are normally pretty busy, and the seams aren't always lined up the best (this means that there is a more noticeable line where the mould was joined together).

They are about the 5-6 hundred dollar range though for the 60cm ones but if you order around christmas or spring they often have event heads where if you spend a certain amount you get a free doll head witch will only be given at the event, these have about an 80-100$ value so its a very good freebie in my opinion.

They also sell lolita styled clothing witch i find is a great inspiration for my own sewing! I often try out a new dress design on a doll scale first because if it looks terrible i've used much less fabric then if i had made it for myself. (unfortunately i cant put in a link because their webpage is flash-based so its all under the one name -_-.)

thats about all i have to say for this company! watch out for the next one!

lolita weight loss

So now that i'm freed from the busyness of having dance shows to be in its back to the blogging and having cosplay and summer bathing suits i feel like i need to lose or at least tone my stomach some more. heres some tips and what im doing to lose weight in preparation for the summer!

1: don't eat anything after 9 PM, if your hungry drink a glass of milk or water.

2: eat breakfast and stay away from eating fatty fried foods or ice cream (homemade popsicles are ok though because they are just frozen juice) and try to have salads and samiches instead of hamburgers and hotdogs.

3: more exercise, i don't often run so im going to try to run more and that should help me a lot with my stamina and lung capacity, and i also should be working on my flexibility.

one other thing you can do if you don't have a lot of time or room is abdominal work but one thing to keep in mind is that if you're not feeling it your probably doing it wrong. i would also suggest hula hooping! its fun and loli and gives you a nice full body workout! we often use hula hooping as a warm up at dance.

Dance

today i was inspired by Milk Tea to talk about whats keeping me busy lately: dance. I Teach as well as perform and this weekend we have a show, the style of dance i do is pretty much everything, ballet, jazz, and circus. I do stilts, trapeze, hoop and fabric as well as some other things but those are the main ones.

Learning everything and practicing is the hard part, teaching is easy and performing is always fun! but one thing that bothers me about the style of dance is that a lot of people will be "oh thats cool i wish i could do that but i would totally fail." You can do it! when i started i was barely flexible and not all that strong, those come with practice even though it takes a while and if one style isnt working for you try another! if you have terrible balance don't do stilts, do something like trapeze, (not flying trapeze where you swing from really high but static where is low enough that you can grab it from the floor). There is ALWAYS something that you would probably be good at with some work. The same thing can be applied with lolita! if you "don't have the body type to wear the typical sweet skirt then find a different style of skirt! or a dress! theres always something if you try!

so never stop trying and never stop doing what you love! Because i've stuck with circus arts for so long i've been able to meet some awesome people and train with cirque du soleil performers and ex-performers! awesome stuff hapens if you just stick with it!

Le Fabuleux destin d'Amelie Poulain

Otherwise known as Amelie in english, Amelie is a french movie about the life and adventures of the heroin that the movie is named after. When i first watched the movie i watched it in french class without subtitles and found it a bit confusing but understood it somewhat none the less, then i recently watched it again and found i enjoyed it just as much- if not more and understood it much better, its just one of those movies that the more you watch it the more things you pick up.

Although the movie has no base in lolita fashion i still found it could apply to the life of a lolita, being all alone in a big city and having an odd upbringing then one day finding love and adventure is something we all dream of. but her life is extrodinary yet normal at the same time! so its not to much like a fairy tale.

I honestly really enjoy the opening sequence of the movie and it captures my attention right away and keeps it with all the wierdness! i highly recommend it!

Asian ball jointed dolls

Have you ever seen the anime Rozen Maiden? these dolls are what those are based off!

Otherwise known as dollfies they are high quality dolls that are anatomically correct and pose amazingly well! one of the most famous and the first company to really make dolls like this was a company called Volks, they have many sizes and age ranges from tiny newborn to ones that look in their 20's. I have been interested in these for a couple of years now and own a couple of my own. but the reason im talking about them now is Volks co-op work with Baby and other companies like H.Nato in the past! I think the possibility of having matching brand outfits is adorable.

However they are quite expensive depending on the company, Volks being one of the most pricy but they are adorable and well made, I own one and shes my favorite!

I plan on talking more about these dolls if theres and interest in it, hopefully talking about different companies.

outfits of the week

Here are two outfits i wore this week, they are more of a casual lolita then anything, sorry i didn't take more photos, i just thought i would start doing this more often and talk a little about why i chose to wear that particular combination.

Now in this photo never-mind the leggings on my legs, thats actually part of my dance ensemble, i was on the way to dance when i snapped the shot, i normally wouldn't wear leggings with lolita. and i would wear cute sandals with this dress. the dress is made by me.

This outfit i wore to a job interview its casual and classy without being too lolita-ish that i stand out in the wrong way. skirt by me also, shirt from sirens and shoes from payless (offbrand tights).

hope you enjoyed! ill try to do one of these about every two weeks so watch out for the next one!

my beauty regiment

so as most women have i also have a beauty regiment, not a very strict one but it exists! So this is what i do everyday to look the way i normally do. I don't believe that you should smother yourself in cremes and lotions though because theres only so much your skin can absorb in a day and i would rather have it absorbe good things rather than things it doesn't need.

Step one: i have a bath in the morning, i find them more relaxing even if they do take more time.

Step two: i towel off my hair and let it dry naturally before i straighten it. (this takes about an hour and i try by best not to blow dry it or straighten it while its wet.)

step three: Makeup! once again i try not to use too much product on my face and be as gentle on my skin as possible so it will treat me nicely when im older!
-I use Provici cosmetics pore perfecting face primer to kelp hide my pores and acne.
-Clinique touch base for eyes to prime them so my eyeshadow stays longer and i wont stain my skin if im wearing dark colours.
- I put on my eyeshadow (a The body shop, Marcelle, Provici mix and match of colours), eyeliner (Rimmel London) and mascara (Provici).
-then last but not least i put my foundation, i know its weird for me to put in on last but thats what i do and it works well to get rid of any eyeshadow that might have fallen and cover up dark circles etc. i use Provici cosmetics nude mineral powder foundation for this.

and thats what i do! Provici is a small-ish cosmetics company where i live and i love their products! its good quality stuff and the guy who owns it (Anthony) is super awesome and funny, the only sad thing is that they dont sell all of their products on the internet.

hope you enjoyed!

Kerchief!

My boyfriend suggested this as we were playing with my serger the other day and he wanted to make a handkerchief because it would be classy, its such an easy thing to sew so why not?

a square of fabric with finished edges and maybe if you feel like it some nice embroidery makes up a nice handkerchief that is ideal for both the classy gentleman and lolita best of all it can replace tissues and save trees!

a Handkerchief can also make a good gift (or gifts in a set) for your friends and it would be super cute to embroider their initials into them! i cant get out the image in my head of a lolita pulling out a cute handkerchief and giving it to the boy she likes ^^;; or dabbing her eyes with it, ah how cute that would be!

Nails

Since i haven't posted anything in a couple of days and haven't gotten to uploading the pictures for my next couple of posts I will talk about nails today and how a buffer and simple nail polish can be your friend!

I love the cute nails with the gems and pearls glued on but for my every day life its very impractical, especially since i dance, and i teach dance and for that Im not allowed to have fake nails on for safety reasons (around show time we are not even allowed to wear nail polish no matter what colour) and i don't want to have them on for just a day or two and because i never wear them Im also not accustomed with living with extra long nails.

However I do try my best to keep my nails long and even with a nice coat of pink nail polish whenever possible and for the times when i cant have nail polish on i like to buff them to keep them shiny. Buffing your nails doesn't take a lot of time (5 minuets at most really) and you cant screw up like with nail polish.

Fake nails and nail polish are all good and i enjoy wearing them when i have the chance but often i don't but i like to have alternatives for when i cant wear nail polish, on that note buffing your nails is also good to keep in mind if your nails ever turn green from lack of oxygen (its happened to me from to many layers of nail polish).

i also find that a nice coat of nail polish that compliments the colour of my dress or outfit is a simple way to add to an outfit and doesnt painting your nails just have this girly essence about it?

Recommended Reading

I bought this book a while ago actually and only thought to talk about it now, Its a really good reference book for sewing and theres a couple projects like the apron that would be really neat to try. Its a bit pricy running at about 45$ but if you want to start or improve your sewing this book is great! It really does show everything from how to thread a needle to how to do reverse appliques.

I sew a fair amount and i find it useful for ideas and if i forget how to do something, it also has techniques that you might not have heard of before such as hemming techniques that look invisible and herringbone seams (i had no idea they existed) that look really cool. Give the book a look over and see what you think!

petticoats!

So far today was a very productive day, i made a petticoat for myself witch was quite interesting and i would suggest if you don't need to make one yourself- don't! theres so much fabric to look after and gather and the tulle itself seems to disappear if you put it on the floor!

i started to cut the fabric before i realized what i was getting myself into and Oh My! i was swimming in fabric before i knew it. though in the end it turned out pretty good and it does the job alright i was hoping it would have a little more poof. Oh well.

Driving me lolita.

So today i (finally) got my drivers license after like a year and a half of having my learners... But besides the fun of scarring my friends and other drivers the car itself isn't that fun. The car is a big blue SUV with a beige interior and its just not anything special or fun to drive.

I've never seen a lolita talk about their car in a blog so i though i would bring this topic up, do i just post a giant Roxy sticker on the back of my parents car to girl it up? or seat covers? or something more permanent? its still their car so i cant do too much to it but it would be nice to add some pink to it. evan doing a search on google i only came up with 2 pictures of cars that were lolita-ish.

In Europe you can almost always take public transport and don't really need a car but in Canada and the US most of the time unless your in a really big city theres not many options for public transportation so you need a car. What do you do for transport on and everyday basis and if you have a car or something what does it look like?

My weekend highlights

So this past weekend i went out to my boyfriends cabin and we went for a canoe ride/paddle it was very nice sitting at the front and him paddling us along, i would suggest this activity to any lolita who wants to do something fun at the cabin even if you have to paddle, just watch out for spiders, in out canoe there was like 5 spiders that made me almost tip the boat...

Also its good to avoid hammocks, i know that there comfy and nice to swing in but when your in a skirt try to avoid them, its very hard to find a comfortable yet dignified position in a petticoat, but if your wearing pants or a bathing suit go for it!

but what about tea?

I've wondered long and hard about the question; do you have to like tea and cakes to be lolita?

well you don't have to, if you prefer teas stronger counterpart coffee thats fine to or just a class of water even. Its not a must but certainly considered more lolita if you do. perhaps your watching your figure or just cant take the sweetness of cake, well thats fine too, there are other alternatives, surly there is some sort of sandwich you can eat.

my point is that there is always an alternative you can seek out that is almost or just as good. you dont have to stick to the norms to be lolita, lolita is about being out there and comfortable with your style.

Lolita hobbies

So today i thought i would talk about some more lolita hobbies. The most popular are drawing and sewing of coarse but also knitting or crocheting are also perfectly acceptable and in my opinion often overlooked. Being creative and productive while killing time feels great, and if you haven't had a chance to go to the fabric store lately or are really poor at drawing.

the magic of knitting is that you can find yarn at any wallmart or zellers they evan make balls of yarn that are the perfect size to make a pair of socks. it is available in a variety of colours and fibres so you can make the pinkest fuzzy-est pair of socks of scarf you want!

Sewing is a popular hobby for lolitas, and it is also very useful to help make your own wardrobe without the cost of brand names and the trouble of things not fitting you right. Soulless

despite having to spell the title of the book out about 5 times so the nice lady at the bookstore could find what section it was in i finally got my hands on the book witch i have been eager to read. The book is entitles Soulless and is about a woman who gets into some big trouble as she meddles with the affaires of BUR (the supernatural beuro thing) in her would of Vampires and Werewolfs.

Well thats my summery of it alteast. its a very interesting book i only wish it was longer so i could still be reading it. (i finished it last night in the wee hours of the morning) and i am very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

My pet peeve with this book is actually the cover page, although she has a dress that colour and a parasol (although not quite the same) in the book she does not have a hat like that, and she at no point has a pair of goggles (although there are some neat glassicals in the book) and it makes you think that the book will be far more steam punk that it really is. I'm not entirely sure why this annoys me so much but it does.

Sucrerie magazine

This is a handy online magazine that helps out us western lolitas! Its colourful pages are up to date and offer many tips and tricks for beginning and full-time lolitas evan though its not the most professional mag out there. The only thing that really bugs me about it is how there aren't many (if any) tutorials.

However i am thinking of maybe submitting a tutorial for how to make a basic skirt, (one thats easy and patternless) but i don't know if i have the fabric to do it right now but i could always pull together photos or make a mini one or something, its not that hard as long as you have a sewing machine.

Heres the link to Sucrerie Mag. You should really check it out.
