It was a very exciting debut at a small get together with a few friends for halloween, of corse more then half of them were boys, so after a couple of "looks nice"'s it was back to hockey (we lost again).

Technology in school: blogging?

image from tumblr

As someone who blogs for the fun of it I found it really interesting how In one of my university courses we have to participate in a class blog groupe.

I've herd from my friends in a Writing/Communications program that for their school they are required to keep up with social media and blog/tweet/facebook all the time as part of their program, but what does a textiles course need me to blog for?

Professors are using blogging as a way for their class to communicate their thoughts and opinions to their classmates and allowing them to actively participate in their education. Through responding to each others questions and opinions you have an opportunity to learn more.

I enjoy it because I'm one of those people who doesn't like answering/asking questions in class but can go on forever on the internet. ^^;;

Have you ever had to do this for a class? Did you enjoy it?

British pathe

Today i found a wonderful you tube channel dedicated to historical film clips called british pathe. Theres some wonderful war clips and of coarse fashion clips! theres even a couple of clips of women from the early 1900's, the end of the victorian era! Its interesting to see a film of the actual people doing normal things instead of a interpretation or reinactement.

Put a sock in it!

A heres great way to make a shoe fit thats too big for you. Put a sock in it. as simple as that.
Or if there only slightly too loose and your already wearing a pair of knee highs wear a small ankle sock under the knee highs to add more bulk.

I yesterday I received my shoe order from baby! however because I could technically fit both L and LL sizes, I decided to play it safe and go with the bigger one. and sadly it turned out that they are slightly too loose on my foot (but still better then too small). So I tuck a sock and shoved it into the toe of the shoe and now they fit perfectly! Wich is good because I love them to death, especially the black ones.

with socks in toe

also with sock shoved in.

Another thing that I had to do to the shoes is add another hole for the buckle because even on the tightest setting the straps were waaaay to loose. And for that all I did was take a yarn/tapestry needle and shove it through the strap where I wanted the new hole to be, yarn needles are way bigger then normal hand sewing needles so it wasn't hard to shove the buckle through the new hole.

Look forward to some new outfits with these shoes!
And happy 100th post!

comparing experiences: ear piercings

I have had my ears pierced twice now, once because of a misinformed christmas gift (of a whole tin of earrings), and more recently because I want to wear adorable and nerdy earrings.

The first time when I was about 13 and my parents tuck me to Clairs (the accessory shop) in the nearest mall. I was pierced with a piercing gun using gold earrings. I remember bleeding a fair bit and crying because of the pain.

The second time was a bit over a month ago now, was done in a tattoo parlour, by a professional. They used a piercing needle and surgical steel earrings.  it hurt about as much or even less then a shot you get in your shoulder, and barely bled at all.

The cair regime i was told to follow the first time is completely different from what i was told to do by a professional. no alcohol, no turning, no hydrogen peroxide. just mild soap and some salty water. This is the single most infuriating of things, when I had my earrings in the first time they lasted about a year but were plagued by infection and never healed. and i never got to even change them once. eventually my parents and i were annoyed with them and we just tuck them out.

So far I haven't gotten any infections and they seem to be healed after a month. perhaps i will wait another week to change them just to be on the safe side (I was told 4-6 weeks healing time).

Please If theres anything to learn from my experience is to always get your piercings done professionally.  Its much less painful, safer,  and the piercers are more knowledgeable. No matter the age.

30 Day challenge Day 6

10 Things you cant live without in lolita:

1- JSK's! They are the main thing in my lolita wardrobe! what ever would i do without them?

2- Petticoats! as scratchy as some of them are I cant stand to wear a brand dress without one!

3- Online lolita communities, blogs and LJ is where i get all my news on the latest trends and styles. I love looking at the co-ordinates on brand blogs!

4- Baby the Stars Shine Bright. I probably wouldn't be a lolita without this companies clothes calling for me to buy them! Want!

5- Cute shoes! I love 'em! and lolita is the perfect excuse to wear them!

6- Short-shorts/spanks. I'm always worried when I'm wearing a skirt that im going to flash someone. the shorts help prevent that and save my sanity on windy days.

7- My friends! There always supportive of my weird style and even enjoy dressing in loli on occasion too!

8- Tea parties! my favorite lolita event! I love hosting them and spending the day before/morning of baking.

9- Taobao, if i had to buy everything brand my wallet would be very sad. I try not to buy replicas though. (unless their shoes)

10- Accessories! Because what outfit would be complete without them!

30 Day challenge day 4

10 Different kinds of food you like.

1- Tea! Im not sure if tea counts as food really, but it would have to be my favorite thing ever to drink.

2- Ice Cream. My house growing up has always had ice cream in it, me and it are practically inseparable. The different flavours and textures it can have!

3- Milk. Again not sure if this really counts, but i love milk, it makes a great late night snack replacement and cereal would be nothing without it.

4- Chocolate. What girl doesn't love it? nuff' said.

5- Cold apple pie. I love the taste of the cinnamon and apples and the consistency of the crust cold, its just not the same to me warm. (though its still delicious)

6- Scones. They go great with tea and are quick and easy to make for yourself and guests.

7- Homemade chocolate chip cookies. I love them when there slightly undercooked, they stay soo soft on the inside even a day or two later.

8- fresh bread. Mmm! so good with a bit of butter. its so warm and pleasant in my tummy. :)

9- Cup Cakes. I only buy them though if there not the stupidly overpriced kind. otherwise im happy with the homemade kind.

10- dried fruits. As weird as it sounds i do like them! especially bananas and mango, there healthy for you too!

30 Day challenge day 3

10 things you hate about lolita

1- Black and white monstrosities. I know the classic black and white can be done well (and i like the look when it is), but normally it isn't. its normally done as a more cosplay lolita look and the dresses are sometimes of poor quality or poor design.

2- Knee high socks make me look short! So annoying! and its really hard to find tights to match instead of socks sometimes.

3- Bad wigs. This comes more from doing cosplay but is occasionally seen in lolita, the rats nest wigs or wigs where you can see the wefting just rub me the wrong way, you put so much time and effort into the outfit (and money) and its ruined by the wig.

4- Finding out after you placed an order that sizes from that company run small/big. This happend to me when i did my first bodyline order, i found out that the shoes run big and spent until the package arrived a week later worrying about the shoes i orderd.

5- Blocking out your face in photos unnecessarily. I know some people want to be faceless on some sites but when you have one picture with a heart over your face and in the next one you dont it doesn't make sense to me. so what if you looked a little derpy, thats what photoshop is for if your so worried. or dont use that picture. pick having a face or being faceless!

6- Really liking a dress then finding out its sold out in the colour you wanted. its always so sad when this happens to me.

7- Long waits for items to ship. I'm impatient ok?

8- Cat/animal hair on my brand! I have 3 cats and a dog at home, there not allowed into my room near my brand but as soon as i step out wearing it theres suddenly a billion white hairs on my black dress -_-.

9- Split wigs making your skin tone look wierd. I noticed this with my MintyMix wig, the colours really play with my skintone and make me look a little wierd. i still love the wig though.

10- Not being able to wear it all the time. I dont like how its too cold to wear in winter and worry some to wear it when its raining, etc. but i put up with it ^^

30 day challenge day 2

Ten things you love about lolita

1- The silhouette. I've always loved how the skirt poofs away from the body and how te bodice of the dress works to slim your waist and make your legs look loooooong!

2- The prints! theres no where else where you can find adorable prints of little sheep danceing, or chandeliers, or alice in wonderland, quite as cute as lolita fashion. I think the prints are one thing lolita has uniquely to itself.

3- The feeling you get wearing it.  I love the feeling of wearing a dress even if im not leaving the house wearing it, i still get the feeling of being adorable and happy.

4- The shoes! like any girl, I can never have enough pairs of shoes! I love all the cute shoes you can find, from rocking horse to simple heels with a bow on them.

5- Meetups. I really enjoy going to meetups and chilling with others that are interested in the same things as me, the same fashion. although we dont know each other very well yet we still manage to talk and have a good time!

6- making everything in life a little more adorable. I think lolita does this to a lot of people. once your into the fashion suddenly everything should be just a bit cuter then it normally would be. I find myself tying bows to vases and adding table runners to a dinner setting and buttons to jackets, to get a little extra cute.

7- The complements from people on the street! this is one of the most potentially daunting and rewarding parts of lolita, going out in public with it. of coarse you get the weird looks and scowls but you also get the compliments from passers by and the little old ladys, I love compliments from elderly women!

8- The confidence it gives you in everyday life. even if your not wearing lolita, if you need to do something daunting i always find power in thinking "well if i can go out into the world at my frilliest, presenting in front of the class looking normal shouldn't be that hard."

9- the accessories. I love all the bracelets and necklaces you can find, the headbows and rings too! you can pair them up for something OTT or a casual lolita look.

10- the brands! where would i be without Baby the Stars Shine Bright? probably stuck in jeans and a baggy boring t-shirt. I'm glad i excepted that trend. Baby has a little something for everyone and i really love the prints Alice and the Pirates comes out with.

30 day challenge part 1

Ten things about your lolita bubble:

1- theres a tiny lolita community where I live, i think theres about 7 of us total? the last meet i went to was 4 people including myself.

2- All my JSK's that I didn't make myself are from Baby. There my favorite brand.

3- My parents aren't opposed to lolita, but they do laugh at me a bit when they see the outfit i chose.

4- I always carry granola bars on me, even to meetups.

5- Winter is a hard time to be a lolita where i live, most of the winter im forced to wear jeans. :( Im not about to wear sweatpants under my skirts, nor do i want frostbite.

6-  My boyfriend is alright with lolita, but he isn't a fan of how much it costs.

7- I would really like to have my own lolita line one day. I'm working on it! i swear!

8- I'm a BJD owner, and i dress my girls up in lolita as well.

9- I would have to say my style is bittersweet (though thats not really a lolita style its a mashing of gothic and sweet), i like the darker prints and some sweet prints. sadly as much as i love it, classic lolita seems like it just isn't for me to wear.

10- I was interested in lolita for years before i decided to sew or buy anything other then the GLB's. and i'm really glad I worked up the courage, my world is a lot cuter now and i can dress in a way i enjoy.

Qutieland Review

yay! my order!
Heres my review for the taobao service Qutieland.

The product:
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the product, they look nice and are pretty comfortable. there made of vinyl wich it says when your ordering, i was pleased by the quality of the soles though, there nice and thick and wont wear out quickly so the shoe should last a long time.

another thing i like was the snaps that fasen the straps to the shoe. so you dont have to undo the buckle everytime. though im worried that the snap will ruin the vinyl around it and break from use, but ill deal with it when it happens.

The bags are a pretty good quality, the seams seen sturdy and they look the same as the pictures, no complaints.

4/5

Service/shipping:
My Qutieland order arrived about the 20th of July, while i was away so i couldn't review it until now but (in my opinion) it should have arrived much sooner. my payment was recieved by them on the 20th of May. After i paid it tuck apparently 10 days to "process my order" (where the confirmed the colour of one pair of shoes) and THEN another 25 working days (and a few more after that) before my order was shipped. it tuck about a week and a half for the package to arrive, wich is normal.

1/5

Packaging:
Everything arrived safe in a box no scuffs or scratches, the shoes were in shoe boxes inside the box and the bags were in plastic with tissue inside them to keep their shape. the outside box was pretty beat up, but thats probably the postal systems fault.

5/5

Overall:
I probably wont use their service again, nor will i recommend it unless your willing to wait a loooooong time to receive your order, or you cant get the product through another service similar to qutieland. I find it a needlessly long wait.

3/5

secret project revealed!

Surprise! I was quite busy making this grad dress for my good friend Genevieve!
Its hard to see the detail on the bodice in these pictures but its all rouched.

I was a good experience and will look good in a portfolio, I had never done rouching before this and had to learn as i went along, wich turned out alright but stressful at times when the organza decided it wasnt going to listen to me. -_-

Well that explains my absence! and what i've been busy with lately, i have a couple more posts in the making before i leave wednesday on a trip!

Jlist review

I recently did an order from jlist, a site that sells anime, games, food, cosplay, (prettymuch anything) from japan.
Their shipping was pretty fast, i chose the option to ship in separate packages for faster shipping. i recieved 2 small boxes, one with a bento box, and the other with bath salt, egg shapers and that infamous socks glue.

The quality of the product is what i was expecting, the bento box seems sturdy enough to hold saucy food without it ending up everywhere, it looks exactly like the pictures on the site.
product:5/5

When my first package shipped the order tracker stopped at "printing shipping label" for nearly a week but they did email me apologizing saying when the first package was shipped (though i had already just assumed it had.) and the problem had been fixed. when the second package shipped i received the email right away.

because they shipped it in 2 boxes at 2 different times i received 2 different invoices and my credit card was charged twice but that doesn't really bother me because i chose the option to ship separately.

notification 4.5/5
shipping 5/5

All the items i ordered came well packed in boxes and they shipped on time. overall i give jlist a 5/5.
everything was as described and does its job. i see nothing to complain about!

Lolita Day!

photo taken by my friend at artiemiselani.com
Like many other people i celebrated un the sunday, by marching in the local pride parade! Surprisingly I met a few other local lolitas! I'm not alone anymore! It just turnes out that theres no active community on lj, and the facebook one was rather unknown.

So it would seem im organizing our first meet! this will be quite the experience!

5 Favorite Things About Lolita

Heres a list of things that inspires me the most to be a lolita and to continue dressing and sewing and just continue to enjoy the lifestyle.

1: The esthetic! who would become a lolita without loving the overall look? the petticoats the dresses, the prints! I love it all! candy, candelabra's, cherubs, I always love an outfit post or co-ord no matter the style.

2: Tea parties~ Ever since i can remember I have always loved tea. One of my favorite things to do is bring out a fancy tea cup, dress nice and quietly sip some tea while reading, or host a tea party where we talk polotics, news, or harry potter, it doesn't really matter the conversation as long as its enjoyable overall.

3: Sewing. I love to sew and design dresses. And of coarse lolita is one of the things that inspires me most to sew.

4: The People, everyone is awesome! especially decked out in loli! of coarse theres no other serious lolits near me but my close friends know well enough BtSSB, and general loli-ness.

5: This may come as a surprise but random old women telling me they like my dress always seems to be the compliment that makes me feel the best. You know when your just sitting at the bus stop and the old lady next to you tells you that if anyone gives you trouble, tell them to fuck off. these comments are the most random but also i find them the most empowering. probably because it comes from a source one would least expect.

The Post Strike and What it Means to a Canadian Lolita.

Those of you in other countries may not have heard the news but the Canadian Postal Service will probably be going on strike Friday unless something happens today or tomorrow.

This has me REALLY thinking about just how much we depend on the post; letters, bills, cards, packages, they all need to get to you somehow. I'm waiting on 4 things to be mailed/arrive, what will happen to them if its a long strike?

As lolita we depend on the post for most everything lolita we need/want unless you're lucky enough to live in a city with a brand store. what would we do with out it as a lolita?  I am worried about my packages but i also know what without the postal service the country and businesses cant function normally so it cant be a long strike.

I'll post more when more news is available or it happens.

New arrival!

My new baby dress arrived in the mail earlier this week!
Its the Dobby Rosebud in lavender.

I was surprised when i opened the box, its not a cotton twill like i thought it would be its more of a crepe. It is very light and airy though! perfect for spring and summer! I'm really looking forward to wearing this to any picknick or park this summer!

I do have to say though that this dress falls shorter on me then my other baby dress, its at my thigh instead of just over the knee. If your thinking of buying this dress and normally have length problems with brand items this one might be too short. I'm not sure if this was done because its a summer dress or because the waist of the dress is higher also.

Also the fabric has little shiny silver diamonds in it! (in the weave of the fabric not actual beads or anything) I looked at the stock photos afterwards an realized you can just barely see them, if your looking for them. but they show up much much more in real life!

circled is one of the diamonds

Kamikaze Girls -the book

I recently finished reading the Kamikaze girls book, I watched the movie first about a year ago and recently thought to read the book because its become sort of a "lolita classic".  In the movie I found Momoko had a lack of character, and that she was a little too one-dimensional. However in the book you get more of a glimpse into her thought processes and her personality comes out more. wich was a great relief!

I also find the book was better then the movie in that you aren't so much caught up in the visuals to miss the point of the story, of getting along even though your completely different people. The book isnt really about fashion, even though its a major part. Its about values. When we watch the movie, with Momoko's bonnets and petticoats we tend to forget this.

As with most books-turned-movies I would recommend the book over the movie! Its a must read for anyone interested in the spirit and background of lolita. (the book itself give a bit of a history lesson of how and when it first began).

Also I found out that it has a sequel? am I behind the news or is it because it hasn't been translated or something?

Practice makes perfect!

Pardon my eyes staring into your soul, but I would like to bring attention to my false lashes. not that ridiculous or obvious right? right? I owe all the credit to practice.

It always pains me to see a girl, who has put so much time and energy into their outfit then when it comes time for makeup, bombs. be it crooked eyeliner or poorly applied falsies. Most lolitas wear some amount of makeup on a daily basis but only for special occasions or meetups do most of us bring out the big guns.

It can be very useful, when you have the time to spare to play with your makeup, with what you want to wear to the next meetup. what blush looks best on you? or make it as ridiculous as you want, draw eyebrows on in eyeliner, give yourself 5'o'clock shadow! no bodys looking.

If your feel the need to practice putting false eyelashes on like I did, go to the dollar store or the drug store and buy the cheapest ones and just practice. you should be able to use the same pair about 5 times as long as your careful.

Fine China

I have a confession, I'm a china fanatic. I thrive in antique stores looking at all the tea cups and china sets.

Its always been my belief that every household/woman should have a set of fine china. And that the pattern should reflect its owner in a positive fashion. (oh the symbolism of flowers!) So i have begun thinking of what pattern i should choose to be my main set (with all the plates etc.) and found its really hard!

Theres just so many patterns i dont know where to start! but while i'm floundering about trying to make a decision ill leave you with a tip:

I you hold a piece of china up to a light (in this case a teacup) you can tell if its real bone china if you can see the brand on the bottom through the cup.

Its kind of hard to take a picture of but the grey in the middle of the cup is the brand showing through the cup in the light. otherwise the inside of the cup is pure white.

If the cup isn't real china the light wont shine through. or it wont have a brand mark.

Hope it helps you out sometime!

Its spring! Time to start the gardin!

Every spring I like to challenge myself to grow a plant (normally a flower) other then the usual house plants. I've never really had a green thumb but sometimes the flowers end up living and I have a nice focal pop of colour in my room.

This year I've chosen to grow Aster flowers (seen above) for their symbolism. "Symbol of love, daintiness, talisman of love" (wiki) This seems to fit with my life right now.

If you have more of a green thumb then I do perhaps you should try a slightly larger outdoors garden, or a small herb garden (the kind that comes in a kit). Gardening can be a relaxing hobby for the long summer days as long as you dont get your favorite dress dirty!

Do you enjoy gardening or ever try to grow anything?

Stockings Vs. Knee Socks

Ah the wonderful pattens of knee socks, brands make ones that match your favorite print, they can go well with pretty much everything and of corse they are a staple of the lolita wardrobe. And as much as I love them I would never-ever wear them with a skirt, the terrible things.

If you are like me with more muscular/short legs you should understand my pain.
I am told this is Ashlee Simpson,  apparently we have
the same problem.

Unless I am wearing a very short skirt (or shorts), Knee socks make me look like I'm 4 feet tall. They break up my leg in a very unflattering manner. This is why I almost always wear tights/nylons/Stockings (whatever you want to call them) with skirts.

Stockings in my opinion are ignored far too much by lolita brands!  This makes me sad inside.

Not Chunky!
The one problem With stockings is that they dont come in nearly the pattern range that socks come in, theres; solid colour, striped, some with flower patterns and of corse fishnet. And can sometimes be hard to find in the colour you want.

Please dont wear something unflattering because you feel you have to is really what I'm getting at here. If you know you look terrible in something find and alternate way to wear it, or an alternate cut. Socks are just one of my personal pet peeves because I need to wear shortshorts to wear long socks, but i really love the patterns on them.

Mintymix Wig Review

As I mentioned in my last post, I recently ordered a wig from Mintymix, heres the Review for it!

stock pic
on me with bangs cut
Besides the pink colour washing me out a little, I really like this wig! The fibers are soft and the wig itself if pretty thick. The wig is one of the wigs that are in stock at the moment (as i am too lazy to wait for the pre-order), I placed the order on a thursday night and received the tracking number the next day!

not to mention the packaging it came in was super cute and well done!

the wig itself: 5/5
really good quality for the price. The pink looks a little darker in the stock picture but its almost the same.

packaging: 4/5
I would have rather it been shipped in a solid box rather then a bubble envelope.

shipping: 5/5
super fast! I received the tracking number the next day.

overall: 4.5/5
I would defiantly recommend Mintymix!

outfit post!

Today I went a bit punky! I recently bought a Mintymix wig and have been looking for a good time to wear it! I'll do a review of it soon!

outfit run-down:
-everything is off brand but the wig!

some simple co-ords

Heres some more simple co-ordinates that I put together this past week for spring, since all the now is melting now and everything is wet and muddy I've been trying to stay away from over the top skirts because they might get dirty. I've also been wearing striped tops (like my "wheres waldo" shirt in the last picture) lately. I've also been trying to match things to my rain boots.

Ideas For Spring tea

my mix matched tea cups!
A great Idea for a spring get together would have to be a tea party! With all the snow melting, the grass coming back and life returning in general! its a good time to sit back, relax with some friends and enjoy the weather before it becomes too warm.

If you like, try to make a mix matched tea set! Its a great way to show off all the different patterns and styles and lets your guests find a tea cup that suits them!

recent work

Surprise! I've been knitting again! I finished this hat the other day. I love the shade of purple and the warmth of the wool! It tuck me a while to make though because of the stitch it uses but its a great addition to my winter wardrobe!

Lately I've fallen even more in love with the site Ravelry, its such a great resource for anything that has to do with yarn really! If your stuck on something or are looking for something easy to knit its the best place to go! I know I've mentioned it before, I apologize.

If you want to see what I've been knitting check out my Ravelry, or look for the perfect pattern (for that thing you've been meaning to make) on ravelry!
